Sometimes work posts need to be about real life. Sometimes work posts need to be about real life. As much as social media has overcome our lives with pretty pictures and depictions of all things perfect, it’s not real life. Today I learned of the passing of a sweet, beautiful friend of over 30 years. He leaves behind an adoring wife and young son that will never get to drape their arms around his neck. For friends like me, we all have lost someone that made each of us so much better because of the gifts he shared. As I think about how cruel the world is I quickly come to realize it’s also so very fragile. I love what Urbane Home does and the team I’m blessed to work with. We have loved playing a role in some incredible transformations. But the truth is none of it really matters at the end of the day if there is not joy in what you do. We have been blessed with some really incredible clients and experiences. We have been incredibly disappointed by some not so great ones. In construction, as in life, nothing is perfect. No matter how hard we try for perfection it is unattainable and we have to allow ourselves the grace to not feel terrible for not achieving it. Today is a strong reset for me and Urbane Home. Today I’m sadly reminded how little time we have on this earth and it’s time we truly focus on the what and who makes that time special. 2023 Urbane Home mission: - Look only to clients that bring joy, understanding, open communication and gratitude - Say thank you more. It’s a simple lesson we teach children but fail in adulthood. Give thanks more to our trades and continued thanks to our clients - It’s ok not to be perfect. If we find ourselves talking about such unreasonable minutia it’s time to move on. It just doesn’t matter. - Celebrate successes. In life we often look for others to fill our happiness tank but we should be proud and celebrate hard work and successes - Focus on health, family and friends! Too often we have let work overtake us. We are introducing more boundaries while still serving our clients well. To my friend, Jackson Rohm, thank you for the joy you have brought and the continued lessons you will teach me. Rest in peace.
